Musical Instruments: Important Info for Grades 4-8 students

Linden students in Grades 4-8 and high school students who have selected music as an option will be in a strings class.

What are my choices for instruments?

Students may choose violin, viola, or cello. To assist new students in choosing an instrument, their first class will include an introduction to all three options.

Where can I rent an instrument?

  • Remenyi House of Music, 109 Vanderhoof Ave, #15, 416-961-3111 Contact: Sergei Zhukowsky, [email protected]
  • The Sound Post, 93 Grenville St., 416-971-6990, [email protected]
  • Long & McQuade Music, 925 Bloor Street West, 416-588-7886,  Contact:  Matthew Golem, [email protected]

It is important that students accompany their parent/guardian when arranging a rental, as instruments need to be sized correctly.

Additional Supplies Needed

All students must have rosin, which is sometimes included in the rental package. Please check!

Students playing the cello must purchase a cello end-pin strap. This is needed to maintain the correct posture on the instrument.

Violin and viola players must purchase a shoulder rest or shoulder sponge for the same reason.

When do I need my instrument?

Returning students should have their instruments on the first day of school, September 3. Beginner students are asked to have their instruments at school no later than the following week, Monday, September 8.

Grade 4-8 classes meet twice a week, and high school classes meet three times each week.  Orchestral string instruments pose a physical and intellectual challenge for students, and additional practice at home is expected in order for students to progress in their learning. The pride that students will feel in their accomplishments is a direct result of this initiative and dedication!
