Breaking the Silence
Last Thursday during our All School gathering, we had the opportunity to reflect on the events of the Montreal Massacre and ongoing issues of violence against women and girls.
The theme of our All School was Breaking the Silence. In our families we had a chance to talk about what breaking the silence means to us, why it is important and how we can create change.
Everyone engaged in a writing activity that culminated in each family producing a poem based on their discussions, thoughts and feelings on the theme. Members from each family read out their poems in a symbolic act of breaking the silence together. The poems shared were moving and powerful. These poems and the Quilt of Resistance we created last year will be on display at our Festival of Lights.
Our community also worked together to gather donations for the YWCA’s December 6th Fund, which helps provide loans for women fleeing abuse. For more information on the fund or to donate, click here.
