Art with Functions
By Sang Lee, STEM Teacher
The Grade 11s completed a major art assignment a few weeks ago. The assignment was for mathematics and art, and required the girls to create art with functions. The Grade 11s were in the process of learning translations, reflections, stretches, and compressions of functions and applied this knowledge to create art. Toni used functions to graph Drake (the popular rapper). Liana decided to graph an emoji icon. Emma graphed a Christmas tree, and Anne graphed the Linden logo using functions. Through this unit, our students learned that writing equations for most functions can be used to solve real-life optimization problems.
