Many elementary school parents might have wondered why their daughters were asking to bring in recycling (especially milk and juice cartons) a couple of weeks ago. Well, at Linden we have a rooftop “garden,” but lately it has not been looking much like a garden at all. To celebrate Earth Day, the girls from Kindergarten–Grade 6 decided to rejuvenate the roof. They used recycled containers to create recycled planters, added soil and seeds (including herbs, vegetables, and flowers), and hung them around the rooftop to add some wonderful greenery. Some girls even used paint and stamps to add some colour to their planters. The morning glories and peas have already sprouted! The students are eagerly anticipating some more vegetable sprouts, giving their teachers frequent seed updates after their daily recess on the rooftop.
