It’s honey extracting time at Linden!
By Lori O'Leary and Savannah Barker, Linden Teachers
Linden Honey Sale Deadline: Friday, November 30, 2018
Our beekeeping partners, Alvéole, the urban beekeeping company, visited Linden to run two exciting honey extraction workshops with elementary students. The girls helped scrape wax from the frames, spin the frames in the centrifuge, filter the extracted honey through a sieve, and fill up the honey jars. We heard students saying….
“It tastes like heaven on a stick!”
"That honey is all spun out.”
The big question after both workshops was: “When is this year’s honey sale beginning?” We are excited to announce that the honey sale is beginning next week, and we have two different options of honey available this year. A limited number of 5 oz. honey jars extracted from the Linden rooftop hive will be available for $10. We also have a small supply of 3 oz. honey jars sourced from the Junction in Toronto available for $8, which the students helped extract. Elementary students received order forms in their homerooms, and older students can get forms from Savannah Barker or download them here: Word | PDF
Due to popular demand, we will limit the first round of sales to one jar per student. Interested families will be able to note their interest in a second jar on the order form, which will then be selected by lottery. Funds raised from our honey sale allow us to continue the much-loved rooftop hive program each year. The cost includes three educational workshops, bi-weekly maintenance, and all of the hive equipment.
We had a "sweet" time learning and tasting. Take a look and see what all of the buzz is about!
