Camping with Grade 6 Students
By Lori O'Leary, Coco Lee, Melody Barclay, and Ellen Fowler, Linden Teachers
"At the end of the day, your feet should be dirty, your hair messy, and your eyes sparkling." —Shanti
Enthusiastic Grade 6 girls and four brave teachers camped on the Linden rooftop as a fitting end to Week Without Walls. Everyone was exhausted after our exciting week of adventure, but energized to experience a unique sleepover with friends.
Highlights for the girls include:
- Consulting about the perfect sleepover menu (teachers said no to poutine AND tacos)
- Shopping at Sobeys for groceries and almost hitting our $100 target goal
- Setting up tents and sleeping bags
- Chopping Tom, Letty Shreddies, meat mashers, cheese choppers, and taco toasting (ask a Grade 6 girl if you don't get it)
- Eating snacks, loaded healthy hard and soft tacos, frozen treats, strawberries, and marshmallows
- Inventing the "Linden Fizz" (see recipe below)
- Posing for pigtail PJ pictures
- Swinging sparklers in the night sky
- Being in the empty school hallways at night
- Having tent-talk time with friends
- Learning that Coco slept all night under the stars
- Waking up and realizing "we did it"!
- Trying to stuff everything back into the same bag it came in
- Enjoying Ellen's homemade cinnamon buns, fresh fruit salad (6 bowls was the record), grandma Marilyn's banana bread, and OJ before heading off for one more adventure
