Social Justice Data Fair

On November 20th, the gym was filled once again with proof that math can be used to make the world a better place.

Highlights of the Fair included the Grade 2/3 study of endangered species, the Grade 4 study of “Food Miles” (or the distance that different ingredients have to travel before arriving on our plates), the Grade 5/6 media study (which determined that Toronto television and newspapers are not representing women, children, or people of colour fairly), and many individual projects from students in our elementary school.

Sidney and Georgia in Grade 7, for example, used a scatterplot to determine that the money we donate to health-related charities does not always match the severity or impact of the disease they represent. Visitors also participated in an informal “popsicle-stick” poll about various issues related to Linden and social justice.
