By Soteira Briginshaw, Linden Teacher, and Beth Alexander, STEM Teacher and Curriculum Leader
The Ontario Association of Math Educators holds an annual conference in Kingston for hundreds of teachers across the province. On May 11, 2017, Beth Alexander and Soteira Briginshaw presented a workshop about the ways in which they use social justice topics to increase student engagement and achievement in math classes at Linden.
Attendees learned how to find useful primary and secondary data, how to discuss social justice topics in ethical and actionable ways, and how to work toward starting their own Social Justice Data Fair. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase all of the ways that Linden students tackle rich mathematical tasks through a critical lens.
