Student playwrights in the spotlight at
Senior Drama Night- November 30, 2009
November 18's Senior Drama Night provided
an opportunity for drama students in grades 9-12 to share
both their acting skills and their writing prowess with the
Linden community, as the evening focused on productions penned
by the girls themselves.
Grade 9 drama students used their knowledge
of movement to put together plays where actions - and only
actions - tell the story. Each group selected a piece of music
as the basis for their play, using the mood and tempo of the
piece to develop a story to match. Drama students in grades
11 and 12 added dialogue into the mix, presenting plays written
as part of drama class.
Grade 10 drama students added further variety
to the evening by presenting an excerpt from Death and
the King's Horseman by Wole Soyinka, a play based
on an incident that occurred in Nigeria during British colonial
rule. Over the course of the play, British authorities prevent
the ritual suicide of the Horseman of an important chief,
overturning turning and throwing the surrounding community
into chaos.
Congratulations to the girls, and to drama
teacher Jenn, for creating an evening thoroughly enjoyed by
all!

Putting knowledge to the test at the Science
Olympics - November 30, 2009
On Friday, November 20, Linden students
in grades 9-12 hosted the school's annual Science Olympics,
taking over the entire building for an afternoon of fun and
learning.
The Olympics began with an interactive presentation
by Mad Science, in
which the girls learned all about chemical reactions. At the
conclusion of the demonstration, the senior students took
over to begin the day's activities in earnest.
After dividing them into teams, our
grade 9-12 students sent girls in grades 1-8 off to a number
of different activities, including:
- Bridge Building (where teams use classroom materials to
build a bridge that can withstand significant pressure);
- Boat Race (where each team constructs a boat, which is
then timed in a race across a shallow pool); and
- Science Trivia (where teams answer questions on a variety
of science topics).
After completing several events each, the
teams convened back in the gym, where event organizers added
up each group's points (both for their participation in the
activities and their enthusiasm). Once the scores were tallied,
the winning groups from each grade level got to collect their
prizes from our grade 12 students.
As always, the Science Olympics were fun
for participants and organizers alike - and they proved a
great way to kick off the weekend!
