Grade 8 Drama class presents Twelfth Night
with a modern twist - November 28, 2008
This year's Grade 8 Drama Night, held Thursday,
November 27, featured a performance of Twelfth Night.
However, while the first two acts were performed as Shakespeare
originally wrote them, the Grade 8 students put their own
unique spin on the final three acts, to great acclaim from
parents, teachers and students alike.
At the conclusion of the first the first
two acts, the girls throw a twist into the mix: turns out
the audience was not actually watching a performance of Twelfth
Night, but a high-school rehearsal of the production.
We then learn about the trials of Cez, a girl who has been
masquerading as a boy to get a role in the production the
audience was just watching. However, in the process, she has
fallen for the school quarterback, Danny Orsino...and unbeknownst
to the characters, their lives unfold exactly in parallel
with the characters of Shakespeare's work.
The Grade 8 students did a fantastic job
with the production, both in modernizing the script and performing
the play; they also put many hours into rehearsing, painting
scenery and assembling costumes. Thanks to all of the parents
who came out to watch, and to Jenn, the Senior Drama teacher,
and Jeanette, the Grade 8 English teacher, for the time and
energy they spent bringing this production to life.

Teachers and students square off on the
court - November 26, 2008
Linden's Senior Basketball team took on
the faculty in a fight for basketball supremacy at today's
All School. Ten brave teachers laced up to face off against
the student team in what promised to be a fiercely-contended
game - and the results did not disappoint.
With students in all grades cheering them
on, both sides gave it their all, and the lead changed hands
many times before the final whistle blew. However, when the
dust settled, it was clear that the teams were very evenly
matched - they racked up 12 points apiece, and the game ended
in a tie.
Congratulations to both sides for great
efforts, and for a wonderful All School!

Linden loses hard-fought basketball battle
- November 24, 2008
After a close, competitive game, The Linden
School's Junior Basketball team was defeated by Bond Academy
in the South League semi-final last week.
Linden trailed by seven points heading into
the fourth quarter of the game, but then rallied in a fantastic
comeback, closing the lead to only one point. However, a strong
effort by Bond kept Linden from closing completely, and our
girls missed pulling off a huge upset by the extremely narrow
margin of 22-21.
Thank you to all of the girls on the team
for an amazing, and fun, season - and to Elizabeth and Mira
for all of the time and effort they put into coaching this
great group. Thanks also to the parents who volunteered to
drive to our many away games - the team couldn't have done
it without you!

Linden learns about Pearls 4 Girls - November
20, 2008
In this week's All School , Linden was visited
by a representative from Pearls 4 Girls, an organization that
raises money for HIV/AIDS orphans in Lesotho. Robin Prest,
who has been involved with the organization ever since returning
from a learning journey to South Africa, talked to the girls
about why she chose to get involved with the group, which
makes and sells pearl jewelry to raise money in support of
Help Lesotho, a not-for-profit which develops aid projects
in the Southern African nation.
After Robin's presentation, several student
volunteers participated in an impromptu "Pearl Bee",
making bracelets for Robin to sell. For every $25 bracelet
sold, $20 is donated to Help Lesotho.

Senior Drama Night a smashing success -
November 19, 2008
On Tuesday, students in grades
8-12 took the stage for our Fall Senior Drama night. The girls
performed some wonderful monologues and one-act plays, many
of which were student-written.
Thanks to all of the parents
and students who came out to support our budding actresses
and writers, and thanks to the students and teachers who gave
up countless hours to paint scenery, run lines and assemble
costumes for this special evening. Finally, a huge thank you
goes out to Jenn, the Senior Drama teacher, without whom this
production would not have been possible.
If you missed this performance,
not to worry - our next Senior Drama Night will be held on
May 21, 2009, so mark your calendars!
Teachers speak to packed house
at STAO Conference - November 17, 2008
On Friday, November 14, Dawn
Chan and Beth Alexander, two of Linden's science teachers,
gave a presentation at the 2008 Conference for the Science
Teachers Association of Ontario (STAO). The pair presented
on "Girl-Centred Teaching in Science" at a standing-room
only session, and got some very positive feedback on ther
talk from their interested listeners.
Congratulations to Beth and
Dawn for a job well done!
