Principal Dawn Chan's Op-Ed in the Toronto Star - May 30, 2011
On Saturday, May 28, Linden's principal responded to the Toronto District School Board's delays regarding opening all-girls and all-boys schools with an op-ed in the Toronto Star.
In the op-ed, Dawn Chan argued for making single-sex education available to as many students as possible to help keep students engaged in the classroom. She cited some of the research and evidence upon which Linden was founded, and shared her experiences as an educator and administrator here. However, as she points out, it is not enough to separate the girls for the boys - we also must take into account how each group learns, as we do every day.

Latin Alive and Well at Linden - January 11, 2011
These days, Latin is often referred to as a "dead language." However, as the Town Crier details in their most recent Education and Camps Guide, this is not so at Linden. With a thriving Classics programme and a booming Classics Club, our students are diving ever deeper into Latin language and culture - and having fun doing it.
Here's a brief excerpt from the article:
"But at schools receptive to [Latin] the appeal to students may also have to do with the manner in which it's taught.
"Just ask Alex Habersellner, a Linden student who has taken the subject since grade 8.
"'It's not just learning the language, it's learning about the culture itself, which is what I find fascinating,' Habersellner says. 'That's really why I continued with it.'
"...in addition to the educational benefits, Habersellner credits activities such as Roman feasts, a class blog about Roman culture and interschool competitions for making Latin fun and engaging.
"[Latin teacher, Jenn] Haines says such activities help kids develop a historic empathy that allows them to see ancient Romans as real people while having fun and learning.
"'They love it," says Haines. "I really try to focus on giving them a challenging academic and creative environment."

Celebrating Our Origins at Linden's Grandparents' Day Celebration - October 19, 2010
The Linden School's inaugural Grandparents' Day Celebration, held in early September, was an opportunity for grandparents and special elders to see their granddaughter's school, get to know other grandparents, and become more involved in the Linden community.
We held two separate celebrations - one for students in grades 1-6 and one for students in grades 7-12 - which allowed each gathering to be small and intimate. At both events, we invited students' grandparents, or a special elder in their lives, to share a story with their granddaughter about an experience that was important in their lives, and asked students to do the same. Students participated in a story-telling workshop at the school during the week of September 7 to help develop their story-telling skills. The girls also worked on their stories with fellow students during our first All-School meeting of the year.
Our Grandparents' Day Celebration was the first of its kind at the school, and helped lay the foundation for future intergenerational projects. This community-building event also supported our theme of "origins" for the 2010-2011 school year.
During the event, a photographer from SNAP North Toronto dropped by to take some photos of the girls and their grandparents and special elders - he snapped the wonderful photo that accompanies this article. To see more like it, click here!

Town Crier Recaps Great Year for Linden Athletics - September 10, 2010
It's a new year in sports at Linden, and our students are already gearing up for ultimate Frisbee, basketball and cross-country running. We had a wonderful 2009-2010 school year in athletics - including record student participation and two championship banners - and our girls and their coaches are looking to put forth a strong effort again this year.
Looking forward to the 2010-2011 athletics season, the Leaside-Rosedale Town Crier highlighted our athletes, along with those from other area schools, in their September issue. Here's an excert from the article:
Dominating the field in girls under 20 soccer, Linden led all teams until the very end when they lost the Town Centre Montessori Private School 5-1 in the tournament final.
The Small School Athletic Federation member is looking to improve on their 2009 season. Linden will join fellow Toronto teams Crestwood, Willowwood and Metro Prep in co-ed ultimate Frisbee where the six-team league sees a round-robin tournament followed by a playoff round.

InsideToronto Highlights Nancy Ruth Award
for Savoy Howe - July 15, 2010
On Thursday, July 17, at our annual Celebration
to Greet the Summer, The Linden School presented heavyweight
boxer Savoy Howe with the Nancy Ruth Award. This award is
presented annually to an amazing woman who has been both an
inspiration as an example to the Linden community, and who
has made a real difference in the greater community. (For
more information about Savoy and about the award, click
here.)
Savoy's work, and the accolades she receives
for it, have not gone unnoticed by the media. The following
is an excerpt from a recent InsideToronto.com
article about the award and Savoy's incredible contributions
to the community:
A 20-year midtown resident, Howe was
awarded the Nancy Ruth Award on June 17 during the school's
Celebration to Greet the Summer event, which includes the
school's graduation ceremony as well as a celebration of
student accomplishments throughout the year.
"I didn't expect to win. The award
is just beautiful," said Howe, who has taught weekly
after-school recreational boxing and self-defense classes
at Linden since 2007.
"I'm just proud to be a part of
the many things that are going on to empower women."
Dawn Chan, a co-principal at Linden,
said Howe personifies both the mandate of her school as
well as what the award represents: diversity, equity and
equality.
"As we got to know Savoy, it was
quite clear to us she was a real trailblazer in the area
of women's sports. She works to recognize those voices from
traditionally marginalized communities," said Chan,
who has also participated in the school's boxing club alongside
other teachers and staff members.
"Savoy is very positive and inspiring
and very good at creating a safe atmosphere. She absolutely
embodies a lot of what we talk about at our school."

Town Crier shines spotlight on Linden traditions
- September 1, 2009
Two of Linden's longest-standing traditions
- and the strong voices and community they create - feature
in the Fall 2009 edition of the Town Crier Education Guide.
Readers hear from Linden founder Eleanor
Moore and former student Lidia Salvador as part of an article
on the evolution of school traditions; Eleanor and Lidia discuss
the school's beginning-of-year birthday party and end-of-year
graduation ceremony, and the common elements that bind these
two events together.
The following is an excerpt from the article:
"Former student Lidia Salvador,
who graduated in 2007 and now works summers at [Linden],
can speak to the power of such traditions. Because she moved
a lot, she attended six different schools, yet Linden is
so ingrained in her heart that she plans on working there
full time in the future.
"I love the place,"
says Salvador.
On her very first day of school during
the birthday event, Salvador says she recalls thinking,
"Wow, this is such a community".
"It's a great introduction,"
she says of the beginning-of-year festivities. "It's
that emphasis on community we're always talking about."
