Linden Celebrates International Women's Day - March 29, 2011
Linden's gym was transformed into a human board game during All-School on March 9 for our celebration of the 100th annual International Women's Day (IWD).
In addition to marking this important day, our yearly IWD event also helps a Rwandan student named Sylvie attend school. For the past several years, Linden has raised money to help pay for Sylvie's school fees, without which she would not be able to continue her studies. She is currently attending high school, and we were delighted to meet her in person during her first visit to Canada in December and January. (To read more about Sylvie's visit, check out our Winter 2011 newsletter.)
Our grade 9 students traditionally organize the IWD event. This year, they planned a large-scale version of "Scene It?" - but instead of answering pop culture questions, they asked students to tap into their knowledge of influential and famous women from the past 100 years.
Students divided into their school families, and each family was matched to a grade 9 student. The grade 9 students acted as game pieces, consulting their families for each question and giving an answer on behalf of the group. Throughout the All-School, students shared their knowledge, collaborated to come up with answers, and added to their understanding of women's contributions to society. And by donating $2 on their way into the gym, they also helped guarantee that Sylvie will be able to continue her education, and ultimately go on to university.

Mardi Gras Comes to Linden - March 15, 2011
On Monday, March 7, Linden students arrived at school to find the halls decorated with purple, yellow, and green for our annual Spirit Week Celebration.
Spirit Week is five days of celebrations organized and hosted by our oldest students. Inspired by their recent service trip to New Orleans, our grade12s decided to give this year's Spirit Week a Mardi Gras theme.
The festivities started at lunch on Monday, when tragedy struck: the Queen of Mardi Gras was kidnapped! Her fellow queens, such as the Queen of Hearts and the Dancing Queen, were desperate to get her back, and enlisted the help of our students in doing so. Through activities such as creating human floats and making Mardi Gras masks, the students and the queens saved Mardi Gras - and managed to rescue the missing queen.
Each day of the week also had a dress-up theme, because what would Mardi Gras be without costumes? To check out some of the great get-ups our girls put together, and to see the week's activities in action, visit our web photo album below. Casting Some Light on Careers - March 14, 2011
Linden students sampled several potential careers on Wednesday, March 2, when we invited speakers from a wide variety of professions to join us for our annual Career Day.
Our grade 10 students traditionally organize this event as part of their Career Studies course. They surveyed students in grades 7-12 to learn about their career interests, and then worked to find speakers in jobs that fit with those interests. As a result, our speakers ranged from an orthopedic surgeon, to an Emmy-Award-winning actress, to a university professor, to a product developer. Each student heard from three speakers, getting an inside look at a few of the many career paths open to them.
Look for an article about Career Day, along with more photos, in the Spring 2011 edition of our quarterly newsletter, The Linden Letter.

Animals, Fables, and Runaway Noses - March 9, 2011
Students in grades 6-8 took the stage en français on March 9 for our annual Junior French Drama Night.
The grade 6 class kicked off the evening with le procès des humains, a play by Canadian author Ginette Proulx-Weaver. Though it may not sound it from the subject matter, this play is a comedy in which several animals, having arrived at the gates of paradise, recount the trials and tribulations they endured on earth.
Next, our grade 7 students performed three fables by French author Jean de La Fontaine. Each group wrote and performed two skits: one representing the original fable, and one showing a modernized version of that fable. Fables included Le lion et le rat, Le corbeau et le renard, and La cigale et la fourmi.
The evening wrapped up with performances by our two grade 8 classes. Our first class chose to perform the popular story of Ferdinand le taureau (the bull). In this play, Ferdinand prefers smelling flowers to fighting, and sits in the bull ring ignoring the matador and spectators. Then, the second class presented Le Nez, adapted from a novella by Nikolaï Gogol. In this shortened version, a barber finds a nose in his muffin one morning; on the same morning, a professor wakes to find that his is missing!

Shakespeare with Grade 7 Flair - February 23, 2011
Our grade 7 class took the stage on Wednesday, February 9, to perform their rendition of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
It's a tradition for grade 7 students at Linden to perform Dream, and each class brings their own unique perspective to the play and its characters. The result is always a treat to watch, and this year was no different. The actors brought feeling, underestanding and humour to their roles, bringing the play to life for the audience.
Check out the slide show below to see photos of the grade 7 class onstage. (Click on any photo to be taken to the web album.)
