Our Celebration to Greet the Summer - June
15, 2009
On Thursday, June 11, The Linden School
brought the 2008-2009 school year to a close with our annual
Celebration to Greet the Summer.
This event, attended in force by Linden
students, parents, alumnae and friends, provides an opportunity
for the community to celebrate the many amazing accomplishments
of our students throughout the year through awards, performances
and speeches; it is also our formal graduation ceremony for
students in grades 8 and 12.
Linden's Steel Pans Band kicked off the
evening with their rendition of O, Canada, setting
the tone for an amazing evening. Throughout the night, the
audience was treated to several vocal performances, strings
concerts and dance routines by students in all grades; interspersed
throughout these performances were awards celebrating outstanding
achievements in academics, athletics, commitment to social
justice and involvement in the Linden community.
The event also marked an important milestone
for two groups of Linden students, as our grade 8s move on
to high school next year and our grade 12s look forward to
post-secondary education. As part of the ceremony, each grade
8 student shared a few of her favourite memories and accomplishments
from the school year, and each grade 12 student - as is tradition
at Linden - got the opportunity to deliver a valedictory address.
Several Linden alumnae also attended celebration to carry
on another important school tradition: presenting each graduate
with a woven wreath of Linden leaves.
We thank all of the members of the Linden
community who joined us for this special night. Special thanks
go to Jenn Stewart, Nancy Hurst and Lidia Salvador for their
key roles in organizing Celebration.
Have a wonderful summer!

The Linden School goes tree top trekking
- June 15, 2009
Our students took to the trees on Wednesday,
June 10, visiting Horseshoe
Valley's Tree Top Trekking course for our annual Last
Day of School field trip. This yearly ritual provides a great
opportunity for the whole school to come together in a shared
activity, and for students to say goodbye to their friends
for the summer.
After being fitted with helmets, harnesses,
carabineers and other safety gear and going through an in-depth
safety orientation, the girls were ready to climb, crawl and
swing. With tree top courses matched to every age and ability
level, each girl was able to choose a course she was comfortable
with, but that also challenged her, building her confidence
as the day progressed.
Throughout the morning and afternoon, the
girls - and their teacher supervisors - negotiated rope bridges,
balanced on wires, hoisted themselves up tree ladders and
soared through the air on zip lines. Smiles were on every
face during the field trip, and from the babble we heard at
the end of the day, we know the girls had fun (although, after
talking to the teachers, we think the faculty may have had
more!)
We thank Deidre, the lead organizer of the
trip, for planning such a great Last Day activity - we know
it's one that will be remembered for years to come!

A talking yam and a picky princess: Primary
Drama Night - June 5, 2009
The family and friends of students in grades
1-4 were treated to two hilarious plays and a series of monologues
at Linden's Primary Drama Night, held on Wednesday, June 3.
The grade 1/2 class started the evening
off with their monologues, which focused on their wishes for
a better world; for example, "I wish that everyone in
the world had enough food to eat." They then performed
a play adapted from an African legend entitled Talk, Talk,
in which a farmer, after hearing protests from the yam
he is trying to dig up, discovers that other objects and animals
around him can speak, too. He goes to the people in his village
for help - but they are surprised to find that the same thing
is happening to them!
The grade 3/4 class then took the stage,
beginning their performance with monologues about Mother Earth
they wrote themselves. They concluded the evening by bringing
to life James Thurber's story Many Moons, in which
a young princess takes ill and claims she will only be made
well if her parents agree to pluck the moon from the sky and
present it to her as a gift. The king and queen call on all
of their wisest subjects to devise a plan to get the moon
- but ultimately, only the royal fool can see a solution.
Congratulations to the grade 1/2 and grade
3/4 students for their wonderful performances, and to Lindsay,
Tonja and Christine for their work in putting together this
entertaining evening.

Do you know where your shrimp comes from?
- June 3, 2009
Using the skills they've acquired in a year
of Computer Studies, Beth's grade 5/6 class is making a difference.
For a recent project in this class, Beth
asked each of her students to find an issue she felt passionately
about, and to use her knowledge of computers to encourage
change in this area for the better. Each girl used the Internet
to research an issue or problem she was interested in, and
then worked with a variety of computer programs and strategies
to develop a way to make her voice heard.
Grade 6 student Meghan, after learning about
the negative impact shrimp fishing can have on sea turtles,
put together a thought-provoking video slide show for her
project. She wants to get the word out as far and wide as
possible, and because she knows the power of viral video on
the Internet, she hopes that making her project available
online will help spread her message.
The video is posted below, and can be viewed
using Windows Media Player. Please take a look, and help Meghan
spread the word by passing the link along.
