Basketball at Linden - December 5, 2011
The Senior vs. Junior basketball game took place last Wednesday after a successful season for both teams. This is always a competitive match up as both teams play their hardest to win bragging rights. The gym filled with students cheering for both sides and there was excitement in the air! While both teams played with a lot of heart and enthusiasm, the senior team came out on top.
After their victory over the junior team, the senior team moved onto the Faculty vs. Student game in All School on Friday. The cheering in the gym was deafening and it was an incredibly exciting game! The faculty played hard and they entered half time with a 14 point lead, but after a slow start, the senior team hit their stride and evened up the score to 26 - 26. The game went into overtime and the Seniors scored the final basket, winning the game 28-26!

Grade 7 Superbowl - October 30, 2011
On October 28, the grade 7 football unit culminated in an explosive Superbowl. It was a rainy Friday, but our determined players were not going to be stopped by a little mud. The four teams, Vicious Vipers, Wild Mustangs, Raging Rhinos and Lightening Lizards, faced off against each other in a fierce tournament. All the teams played to the best of their abilities and after a tense final match again the Raging Rhinos, the Lightening Lizards reigned supreme. Fun was had by everyone involved and when it was all said and done, the players couldn`t resist having a mud sliding competition! It was an exciting afternoon and a great way to end the football unit. Thanks to Elizabeth and Deidre for making the tournament possible!

A Banner Day - October 14, 2011
Looking at their smiling (and exhausted!) faces you can get a sense of how the girls felt about themselves, their team, their school, their support communities (coaches, parents, teachers and friends who support their athletic adventures). The girls discovered a lot about themselves today.
We came home with 3 banners (the most of any school there today) out of the 4 divisions we were entered in. THREE!!!! And one was the VERY difficult U14 (grade 7-8 race) a race that boasts over 100 runners. Also of note, the U16 race went to a tie breaker situation where we won based on our higher scoring 4th runner! We also had many top 10 ribbon finishes including 4 medals (top 3), and most importantly big personal bests in breakthrough performances for all athletes. There was great celebration each time Linden was announced at the awards presentation.
The girls left everything they had on the race course and as coaches we couldn't be any more proud of them. This group of girls (almost 1/4 of our entire school population) was the most hard working bunch of runners we have ever had at practices and it was thrilling for us to witness them realizing the product of their hard work with such confidence and heart. It was SUCH an exciting day!!! Such an accomplishment for our girls and our program!
It was also great to hear teachers and parents from other schools commenting to our girls about what great supports they were to their teammates by encouraging them along the course and finish line, and even helping out by running along beside them when they needed a little extra support.

The Ultimate Ultimate Team - September 28, 2011
Emma and Sarah, Grade 9
On Wednesday, Sept 28th the U20 Ultimate Frisbee Team travelled to Bayview Reservoir Park for Linden's first tournament of the year. As many Lindenites now know, we are the only all girls team who participates in this co-ed tournament. With nine teams entered it was a day filled with long pulls, short laser-like throws and some amazing Michael Jordan-esque catches!
Our team was very young (almost half were grade nine students) and it was the first time for many other new players on our team, but we had an incredible experience.
We played three games: Toronto Prep, TCMPHS and Toronto New School. Each game we played our absolute hardest on both offence and defence; running, jumping and diving all over the place (Deidre and Forbes were very happy about this)! You did not want to get in our way during the play, we were fit, focused and overall a fierce team!
Our point scorers were: Emma, Kia, Alison (grade 9), Katie H, Jamie, (grade 10) and Danielle (grade 11). We later learned that the first two teams we played ended up being the first and second place teams at the tournament, so we definitely played some of our best to score against them.
Overall it was a fantastic day filled with laughter, hard competition and cookies!!!!

Junior Basketball Team are SSAF Champs! - December 20, 2010
On Thursday, December 2, the junior basketball team repeated as Small Schools Athletic Federation champions!
Here is what coach Elizabeth had to say about their effort at the Final Four tournament:
"Both games were VERY exciting. Our semi final game was the girls' best overall team effort, with fantastic positioning and passing, strong defense, and great execution of plays. It was like watching magic on the court seeing all of the girls play smart, work as a team, and show such heart. Mira and I were extremely proud of the girls, and you could tell they knew how well they each played individually and as a team.
"The final game was a nail-biter against Bond Academy (the same team they played in the finals last year). The game was tied 19-19 with a minute and half to go. The bench was wild with support for the five girls on the court, and the girls playing in that last minute kept their cool and got the job the done. All were thrilled with the results. What a group of girls!"
Congratulations to the girls on a great season!

Town Crier Recaps Great Year for Linden Athletics - September 10, 2010
It's a new year in sports at Linden, and our students are already gearing up for ultimate Frisbee, basketball and cross-country running. We had a wonderful 2009-2010 school year in athletics - including record student participation and two championship banners - and our girls and their coaches are looking to put forth a strong effort again this year.
Looking forward to the 2010-2011 athletics season, the Leaside-Rosedale Town Crier highlighted our athletes, along with those from other area schools, in their September issue. Here's an excert from the article:
Dominating the field in girls under 20 soccer, Linden led all teams until the very end when they lost the Town Centre Montessori Private School 5-1 in the tournament final.
The Small School Athletic Federation member is looking to improve on their 2009 season. Linden will join fellow Toronto teams Crestwood, Willowwood and Metro Prep in co-ed ultimate Frisbee where the six-team league sees a round-robin tournament followed by a playoff round.

Celebrating Linden Athletics - June 3,
2010
On Wednesday, June 2, we marked our most
successful year in Linden athletics to date with our annual
Athletics Assembly.
As Linden physical education teachers Deidre
and Elizabeth noted, the year was a success in two important
ways. In terms of competition, Linden teams were outstanding,
finishing consistently in the top half of their leagues and
tournaments and taking home banners in under-20 cross country,
junior basketball and junior ball hockey. Just as importantly,
we had very high levels of participation among our students.
Lots of athletes came out for each team, and the great majority
of students participated in at least one sport.
Reflecting Linden's approach to athletics,
Elizabeth started off the assembly by telling our students
and teachers about the organization Fast
and Female. Founded by Olympic gold medallist Chandra
Crawford in 2005, Fast and Female is dedicated to the empowerment
of girls and young women through sport. In particular, Crawford
wants to "spread the love" (get girls hooked on
an active lifestyle) and "dominate the world" (encourage
girls to rejoice in their potential to be leaders).
For each team, coaches presented awards
for Most Improved Player and Merit. The Merit award is not
a Most Valuable Player award; it is presented to players who
are not only strong athletes, but who also demonstrate leadership
qualities and positive attitudes throughout game and tournament
play. Elizabeth and Deidre also presented awards to the students
in their gym classes who they felt showed the most dedication
to the physical education program throughout the year.
The assembly also recognized another very
important accomplishment. After running increasingly long
distances in gym class throughout the year, students in grades
1-4 completed a "mini half-marathon" on June 1.
Each girl ran a distance of 2.1 km (a regular half-marathon
is 21 km) in under 17 minutes. This is the same distance that
older cross-country competitors run at school meets! To help
them remember their achievement, Elizabeth presented each
girl with a certificate of completion.
The remaining two athletics awards for the
year - the award for dedication to the athletics program and
the Golden Shoe Award - will be presented at our Celebration
to Greet the Summer on June 17.

A Fun Friday at the Field - May 26, 2010
On Friday, May 21, girls in grades 1-4 gathered
at the Rosehill Reservoir Park for Linden's annual Primary
Track and Field Meet. The focus of the day was on having fun
while using the skills the girls have been working on in gym
class throughout the year. With the help and organization
of phys. ed. teachers Deidre and Elizabeth and senior gym
students, the girls participated in events from long jump
to hurdles - and had a great time doing it.
Check out our photos of this event below:

Track and Field Success- May 12, 2010
On Monday, May 10, our senior track and
field team had great showings on both the track and the field
at their annual meet.
Despite being a single-sex school in a co-ed
competition - meaning that Linden entered only half of the
events - the team came an amazing 4th overall out of seven
teams. The team members took home six gold, five silver and
six bronze medals, and all of the girls finished in the top
five in their events.
We hope all the athletes get some well-deserved
rest this week!

Junior Basketball team wins SSAF championship
- December 4, 2009
On Thursday, December 3, Linden's Junior
Basketball team dribbled, passed and shot their way to an
undefeated season, winning the Small Schools Athletic Federation
banner!
After securing a perfect regular-season
record, the girls headed into the playoffs ready to win. On
Tuesday, December 1, they won their first playoff game against
Voice Intermediate School, earning a spot in Thursday's Final
Four tournament.
The team remained undefeated after their
first game in the tournament, moving on to the championship
match. With the banner in sight, the girls played their hearts
out through all four quarters; at the end of 32 minutes, Linden
had won by a score of 32-10!
The team's coach, Deidre, is so proud of
the effort the girls put forth throughout the season, and
spectators at yesterday's tournament couldn't say enough about
the girls' skill, teamwork and positive attitude. Congratulations
to the team, and thanks to all of the students and parents
who came out to support the girls on December 3 and over the
course of the regular season.

Cross-Country team takes U20 banner - October
24, 2009
The weather has turned cold, but the Linden
Cross-Country team had some hot results on October 16 at their
championship races at Sunnybrook Park.
It was a banner day for Linden. The girls
competed in four different age categories, against 652 runners
from 17 different schools, and came home with three second
place team finishes and a banner win in the U20 girls division!
The four members of the U20 team placed 3rd, 4th, 9th and
10th overall, showing great team strategy and working together
throughout the race to come home with the win.
The girls' coaches are thrilled with how
each and every girl stepped up on race day to reach their
individual goals, push through challenges, and give 110% on
the race course. Congratulations to the whole team! The fantastic
results are a testament to the hard work they put in all season.
The coaches would also like to thank all
the parent volunteer drivers who helped out with transportation
on race day, and all the parents who came to cheer the girls
on.

Senior Soccer team reaches tournament final
- May 27, 2009
Linden's Senior Soccer team did themselves
- and their coaches - proud on Thursday, May 21, reaching
the finals of the Small Schools Athletic Federation's tournament
in Markham.
After only seven practices, the girls came
out strong in the first round, winning two of four games with
dominant play and relentless goal-scoring by several players.
Round-robin results left Linden third out of seven teams,
meaning they advanced to the semi-finals against Mississauga
Private School (MPS), one of the two teams to defeat them
in the first round.
Though slightly intimidated by the play
of MPS in their round-robin match, Linden regrouped for the
semi-final, realizing that they could compete with the best
teams in the tournament if they brought forth their best effort.
Following a hard-fought forty minutes of regulation time and
two, five-minute overtime periods, the score remained knotted
at 1-1, meaning the teams were headed for a penalty shootout.
Nerves ran high during the shootout (especially
among Linden's coaching staff), but the girls used the adrenaline
to their advantage and put on a truly spectacular display.
Four of five shooters put their shots away, and netminder
Mina stood firm in goal, holding MPS to only two scores to
send Linden to the final.
From the excitement of the semi-final team,
the girls went straight to the championship match against
the formidable Town Centre, who had a half-hour of rest before
this last game. Linden emptied their last reserves of energy
after an exhausting, scorching-hot day, but unfortunately
went down 4-1 to a very worthy opponent.
Coaches Kate and Radhika are thrilled
with the fabulous effort, skill and sportsmanship the girls
displayed at the tournament, and thank them all for an amazing
season!

Junior Ball Hockey team reaches tournament
finals - April 23, 2009
The Linden School's Junior Ball Hockey team
put forth a great effort at yesterday's Small Schools Athletic
Federation (SSAF) tournament, placing second overall of the
competition's nine teams.
The girls started off the day strong, winning
four of five round robin games and earning a #2 overall seed.
Their performance earned them a bye into the semi-finals,
where they won handily by a margin of 5-0.
In the tournament championship, Linden faced
off against Alan Howard Waldorf School, with whom the team
developed a stiff rivalry last year. After regulation time
and a five-minute overtime period, the game remained tied
0-0; after some outstanding hockey from both sides, the game
was headed to penalty shots. Despite a great effort from Linden,
Alan Howard took the game by a score of 1-0 in the final round
of penalties.
Coaches Deidre and Jeanette are bursting
with pride for the outstanding play, class and sportsmanship
displayed by all of the team's members: Nicole (grade 7) Alissa
(grade 8); Myfanwy (grade 6); Sophia (grade 7); Signy (grade
8); Geneva (grade 8); Laura K. (grade 6); Romi (grade 8);
Antonia (grade 7); Kalia (grade 6); Kima (grade 8); Maggie
(grade 8); and Naomi A.R. (grade 7). A special mention goes
to Nicole, who was trained as a goalie at the last minute
due to an injury; she let in only two goals all day in a briliant
display of goalkeeping.
Congratulations to Deidre, Jeanette and
all the girls!

Senior Volleyball team wraps up a great
season - March 10, 2009
Linden's Senior Volleyball players finished
off a season marked by constant improvement at their championship
tournament on Thursday, March 5.
With their level of play and teamwork getting
better game after game, the girls showed off their best play
of the year in last week's playoff. The team gave it their
absolute all; however, competition in their pool was extremely
impressive (two of the four teams made it to the finals),
and the girls missed coming away with a win. Their season
record was a winning one, though, with the team finishing
6-4 after their final game in February.
Lindsay and Deidre had a blast coaching
a group of very dedicated players, and they thank all of the
girls for a great season!

Junior Volleyball team finishes fifth at
championship tournament - March 5, 2009
Linden's Junior Volleyball squad moved up
an impressive three places in the rankings on Wednesday, finishing
fifth overall in their championship tournament.
After making it into the tournament by a
narrow margin (Linden was ranked eighth overall, and only
the top eight teams in the league make it in), the team faced
three schools in round robin play, playing two games against
each squad. Linden's opponents were ranked first, second and
third, and the girls put up a great fight against each.
In playing the second-ranked team in the
North, the girls lost one game (25-23) but won the other by
an impressive margin of 25-13. Unfortunately, they weren't
able to take a game from the third-ranked team, losing both
matches in very close games.
But the girls' most impressive moments of
the day came against Voice Academy, the team ranked number
one in the tournament. Linden lost one game 25-23 but battled
to a 26-24 victory in the other, much to the chagrin of Voice's
coach. "If it wasn't for you," he said after the
game, "we would have been undefeated!"
When all was said and done, Linden moved
up to a fifth-place ranking from their original eighth-place
spot. Elizabeth and Tonja are proud of their team's play at
a tough tournament, and want to thank all the girls for a
great season!

Linden loses hard-fought basketball battle
- November 24, 2008
After a close, competitive game, The Linden
School's Junior Basketball team went down to Bond Academy
in the South League semi-final last week.
Linden trailed by seven points heading into
the last minutes of the game, but then rallied a fantastic
comeback, closing the lead to only one point. However, a strong
effort by Bond kept Linden from closing completely, and our
girls lost by the extremely narrow margin of 22-21.
Thank you to all of the girls on the team
for an amazing, and fun, season - and to Elizabeth and Mira
for all of the time and effort they put into coaching this
great group. Thanks also to the parents who volunteered to
drive to our many away games - the team couldn't have done
it without you!
